NAQP Study Provides Tools to Improve Profitability of 4C Printing and Copying

(February 29, 2008)

The National Association of Quick Printers (“NAQP”) (www.naqp.com) has just released the 2008/2009 4C Practices & Pricing Study, a survey of how printers price their 4C work based on quantity and processes. The only study of its kind, the 2008/2009 4C Practices & Pricing Study represents NAQP’s second such study in recent years geared toward the needs of small, four-color commercial printers and copying firms.

“The 4C commercial printing and copying market segment has witnessed a substantial increase in demand for services in recent years,” noted NAQP President and CEO Steve Johnson. “We developed this proprietary study and expanded it from our initial study in 2005 to reflect this growth.” The study helps 4C printers benchmark their businesses against industry-wide practices. It also reveals user ratings for 15 different presses and three major suppliers of digital copiers.

The study breaks out data by a number of variables, including sales range, profitability, sales per employee (SPE), sales per DTP employee, hourly DTP charges, and sales per press operator. The vast majority of the study, however, is devoted to data trends in 4C practices and pricing strategies, which include:

  • Graphic/Pre-Press Charges

  • Printing & Copying Sales

  • 4C Process Printing

  • Primary Color Copier Processing & Pricing

  • Color Copier Pricing

  • Copier Pricing

  • Basic Paper Costs

  • Pricing for 4C Reproduction Scenarios
“The 4C industry segment is highly competitive. Our purpose in instituting this valuable research initiative is to share information about how much the industry charges and spends so that owners of small commercial printing and copying firms can compete more effectively and improve their profit margins,” said Johnson.

About the Study
The 2008/2009 4C Practices & Pricing Study surveyed 315 anonymous respondents between October 5, 2007, and December 5, 2007. No individual company data represents more than 1% of any individual statistic.

John Stewart, president of Q.P. Consulting, Inc., conducted the study on behalf of NAQP. Stewart has been providing consulting, speaking and industry research services to the quick and small commercial printing industry globally for more than 20 years. In addition, he is recognized as one of the most widely respected consultants and speakers within the printing industry. A frequent guest speaker at printing industry conferences and events, he also has served as a senior contributing editor to Quick Printing Magazine and published numerous studies and reports on the printing industry.

The 2008/2009 4C Practices & Pricing Study is the latest study in NAQP’s Performance & Profit(TM) Series. To order (member price is $155; non-member price is $225), visit NAQP.com/publications or call 800.234.0040.
